Brazilian Construction Market: General Overview Analysis and Opportunity for Selected Building Materials
According to Carl Cullotta, Vice President and author of the Construction Market Reporter, Brazil and South America may offer US, Asian and European building material manufacturers/suppliers immediate opportunities for growth despite the sluggish world economy.
Frank Lynn & Associates has joined forces with their Brazilian business partner Magnus Landmann to release an important new research study on Brazil's construction markets.
The market overview covers important financial, political and economic factors that support the forecast of continued growth.
o During 2007 and 2008, the Brazilian economy experienced notable product shortages driven by heightened demand as well as capacity expansion initiatives across most building material sectors.
o Over the past few years, the Brazilian construction industry has grown significantly due to the increased access to credit and the elevated housing credit in the country, particularly lower-income housing. Despite the global credit crisis, market analysts believe that Brazil will recover quickly.
o The study suggests that as of November 2008 total consumer credit exposure was only 40.7% of the GDP. Key economic indicators in 2008 and 2009 confirm that current planned construction projects should support the industry and ease a potential negative impact caused by prevailing credit issues.
o The period between January and September 2008 was the best ever for the banking system and also, the highest sales ever for the automotive industry turning Brazil into the 5th consumer and the 6th largest producer of vehicles.
According to the report, there are significant opportunities for US companies to enter the Brazil and Latin American markets through:
1. Direct with imports, selling to major retailer chains and or through distributors. Either through a local Office or representation 2. Establishing an operation in Brazil to serve the region encircling the Mercosur Trade Agreement and 3. Via joint ventures with locally established firms, by investing in existing capabilities that could secure and expand strengths.
Brazil presents considerable opportunities in various segments of the construction industry, including all major building material components-paints and varnishes, cement, ceramic tiles, sanitary accessories/metal fixtures, wood flooring and paneling, vinyl flooring, lighting, glass, steel, plastics, drywall, aluminum and roofing.
